Solar Energy at Sodankylä Airport – A Self-Sufficient Energy Source for Electric Aviation
Sodankylä Airport has the potential to serve as a research environment for the utilization of solar energy in the Arctic region.
The objective is to use solar energy to meet the airport's own energy needs and sell surplus energy to the grid through an energy community. As part of the solar energy utilization project, the aim is also to investigate hydrogen production and storage under Arctic conditions, as well as the potential use of waste heat generated during hydrogen production in the district heating network of the Municipality of Sodankylä.
The efficient utilization of solar energy will support the development of electric aviation while also helping the Municipality of Sodankylä achieve its CO₂ emission reduction targets and move towards carbon-neutral infrastructure.
